battlefields of cupiditas
from 2014 to 2020 the art project battlefields of cupiditas develops the concept of greed by moving from native americans to the rest of the world. the artist, in fact, makes her figures with childlike faces and their interpretation is multiple, they can be either characters that nina staehli uses to make her videos or simple props or, finally, sculptures in their own right. it all depends on the eye that looks at them and interprets them. in fact they are to be considered a real family that grows continuously and whose members correspond to primitive, almost primal psychological traits that are sometimes taken to extremes to express the excesses of society. created for one context, they then appear elsewhere in novel situations. tearhead, for example, is linked to one of nina staehli’s last films, battlefields of cupiditas, where this sad and naive figure meets in cupiditas the personification of greed. it is as a result of her journey along the path of tears that the artist’s thematic focus is very much on greed, which, in her vision, is a hitherto largely unexplored human organ. as a result, she has investigated the color, form, and appearance of greed by reproducing it in the form of more than 120 amorphous sculptures, paintings, or huge hypertrophic inflatable sculptures.
